In Machine Room-Less (MRL) lifts, all the necessary parts of the lift are located in the lift shaft. The drive and the frequency inverter are normally installed in the shaft head. The control system is normally in a door frame.

MRL lifts have a number of special features, especially regarding commissioning, recurring tests, maintenance and the releasing of passengers locked in the cabin. Because there is no machine room and the brake and drive cannot be reached directly, technical equipment has to be provided to release the brake "from a distance" and to monitor the movement of the drive. In order to configure the frequency inverter, a data connection, via CANopen or DCP interface, is  used which makes configuration via the control display possible.

Because in MRL lifts the control systems are installed in areas open to the general public, where very little space is available, special types of construction in very narrow stainless-steel cabinets are used in order to protect the control systems from vandalism.
