How to improve the safety of existing lifts
By the European standard DIN EN81-80 a generally approved checklist for the risk analysis of existing lifts is given, in which all risks are stated.

It is also denominated SNEL (Safety Norm for Existing Lifts) and in Germany it has become important due to the Betriebssicherheits-Verordnung (operational safety regulation).

Important Information For Users

In compliance with the Betriebssicherheits-Verordnung, lifts are subject to a safety check resp. risk analysis. The standard DIN EN81-80 forms an excellent basis for this evaluation.

This operational safety regulation is mainly meant for the owner of the lift and directly requires him to fulfil the regulation. Disregard of the regulation can lead to serious liability problems and possibly problems with the insurance laws in case of damage or loss events.

Depending on the risk and gravity of an analysis criterion, DIN EN81-80 stipulates different terms for taking the necessary measures.

The following mechanical and electrical components should be retrofitted at short term, due to high risk and following the stipulations of the Betriebssicherheitsverordnung:

• Ladder for the well pit
• Control station in the pit with emergency stop, illumination switch, alarm button and socket.
• Well illumination
• Alarm button
• Emergency call system
• Appropriate illumination of machine and pulley room
• Aprons below the car sill
• Railing on the car ceiling
• Enclosure of the drive pulley
• Covers for the speed governor, rope pulleys and chain wheels
• Monitoring switch for the governor tensioning weight
• Emergency limit switch
• Slack rope monitoring device
• Run time monitoring
• lockable main switch
• Phase monitoring
• Inspection operation control on the car roof
• Finger protection and Rope bracket
• and Emergency brake switch.
